Our four-week Gallery 37 Plus project came to a close on Wednesday night with a performance at the Carriageworks Theatre in Leeds, choreographed by Sharon Watson.

The project involved young People in Leeds aged 16-19 training with four of the UK’s top dance organisations including NBT, Phoenix Dance Theatre, The Northern School of Contemporary Dance and Yorkshire Dance. Gallery 37 Plus provided an excellent foundation in hip-hop/urban dance, contemporary dance and ballet. Participants took daily classes with dance artists Simon Kidd, Douglas Thorpe and Tiia Ourilla. The project was part of a national initiative for young people who are not in full time education or employment. Participants received a training grant and a Young People’s Art Award on completion of the project.

David Nixon’s brand new version of The Nutcracker promises the ultimate Christmas adventure and dancers from the Yorkshire Young Dancers scheme will be helping to create the magic, performing with the Company in Sheffield, Manchester and Leeds. NBT and Pyramid of Arts have joined forces to offer young adults with learning difficulties and disabilities the opportunity to become involved in ‘Dance Dreams’, a unique dance and creative arts project in Leeds. The programme will be delivered by Caroline Burn, NBT Dance Education Officer, along with NBT musicians and arts workers from Pyramid of Arts. The sessions are aimed at engaging the young people in dance, music and creative expression.

This week is an intensive training week for students on our Yorkshire Young Dancers’ scheme. NBT is the first Centre for Advanced Training in the country, in partnership with the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, and the only one for Classical dance. During the week they will take part in classical ballet and contemporary classes as well as learning some dances from the repertoire

It is also the final week of training for students on our International Summer School who have been strengthening and improving their classical, contemporary and jazz techniques at the Northern Ballet Theatre studios in Leeds.

Northern Ballet Theatre’s production of The Nutcracker opens on the 11th of October at the Palace Theatre in Manchester. This will be its World Premiere. As this version of the Ballet has never been performed before, there are no pictures of the production. To give you a taste of what The Nutcracker will be like, we will be regularly posting up new images - costumes, sets, rehearsal pictures etc.

 Last season we announced Chiaki Nagao’s retirement after more than 16 years with the Company. We’re please to say that she is back training with the Company to prepare for her final appearances as Juliet at selected performances of Romeo & Juliet in Nottingham and Bradford. She is also helping to rehearse the children performing with NBT in The Nutcracker. Chiaki’s final performance with NBT will be as Juliet in Romeo & Juliet, on Saturday 27 October 2007 at the Alhambra Theatre, Bradford, in an evening dedicated to celebrating her career. New Building Project:

 We were very disappointed that for various reasons it became impossible for us to continue working with Rushbond to develop a new purpose-built home for NBT and Phoenix Dance Theatre in the centre of Leeds.

We are extremely grateful to Leeds City Council who have reviewed the delivery options and agreed to take responsibility for the development. This includes an additional injection of £3M of funding and Project Management provided by the Council. This increases the Council’s contribution to more than £7M.

£3.5M will come from Arts Council England through Lottery funding and the balance of the £11.675M estimated cost will come from NBT and PDT fundraising. A major appeal will be launched shortly.

The City Council’s strategic design alliance has started work on the design of the new building which will be located on Quarry Hill.
