School Roadshow Takes Off Once More
NBT’s popular School Roadshow has begun once more. Now in its third successful year the School Roadshow offers pupils and teachers a behind the scenes insight into NBT as part of an interactive fun filled assembly suitable for primary school pupils of all ages.
“Thank you for the opportunity to open our children’s eyes, hearts and minds to the power of dance. Most of our children will have seen ballet for the first time and were amazed at the versatility, stamina, strength and commitment that is needed to make a good dancer.”
Jill Wood, Little – London Community Primary School
Any schools interested in booking one of the FREE School Roadshow assemblies should contact Catherine Mullaney on 0113 274 5355 or via email.
Builders Try Ballet
The construction team building the new Northern Ballet Theatre (NBT) headquarters in Leeds city centre put on their dancing shoes yesterday to take part in a sponsored ballet lesson to raise money for The Prince’s Trust.
15 of the site team were taught to plié, jete and pirouette by one of NBT’s dance education officers, Caroline Burn, as part of Wates Construction’s annual Community Day, which sees employees ditch their day jobs for local community and fundraising projects.
The builders learnt ballet moves and explored some of the themes from A Midsummer’s Nights Dream before putting their work together to share with colleagues and NBT Academy students. More used to lugging bricks and concrete, the bending and stretching proved tutu much for some.
BBC Look North was on hand to capture the builders doing ballet… [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/8262012.stm]

A Teacher Talks About Ballet On Briggate
Academy Ballet Tutor, Cara O’Shea, tells us about the Ballet on Briggate event in Leeds last weekend.
At 11.30am – after teaching at West Park – I made my way into town, regularly glancing up to the sky to look out for any threats of rain. When I arrived at the stage I was greeted by a group of the Academy students busy handing out leaflets and I could already feel the excitement in the air. We didn’t need to wait long for the event to begin and as soon as it did members of the public stopped and took up positions by the stage ready to see what we had to offer and they certainly didn’t seem disappointed.

Then suddenly it was the turn of the Academy students to perform their piece which I had choreographed for their end of year show in June. This was going to be a revised version with only 10 dancers and new people put in, and so there was a lot of marking through the steps and recapping changes before the real thing. My role for the event was to be in charge of the Academy students and so we all stood behind the stage jumping up and down and trying our best to beat off the chill!
The students performed the dance exceedingly well, especially considering they were in their uniform of tights and leotards and it was so cold. Even though the wind showed no signs of dying down the students battled through the dance and were very relieved to be able to put on some warm clothes as soon as they got off the stage. Only a little while later it was our turn again, and so back we went behind the stage to jump around some more and really show the growing crowd what we could do.
The public showed a lot of interest about many aspects of the company and it was fantastic to see so many people having a go at the ballet barre!
The whole event really seemed to wake Briggate up and the atmosphere was electric throughout. Despite the cold (but thankfully no rain) all who were involved agreed that the event had been a success-and this includes the watching public.

Ballet on Briggate
Jo Dean of Northern Ballet Theatre tells us all about the great day in the heart of Leeds…
Saturday morning at 8.30am it was pretty cold on Briggate as Litestructures pulled their vans up in front of Debenhams and started unloading the stage for our Ballet on Briggate event. We had a couple of hours in which to get the stage and banner, generator and sound system setup and to blow up hundreds of balloons so it was all hands to the deck.

Preparing for the afternoon's performances and setting the stage.
Admin staff from all departments, Friends of NBT and parents of the Academy students all helped to give out leaflets throughout the event, to hand out cake and to talk to the public about NBT. There was a real interest from the public about what we were doing and why we were performing in the centre of Leeds.

Lots of information about Northern Ballet Theatre & Phoenix Dance as well as that essential ingredient, cake!
Acting as runner for the event, my job was to make sure that the performers were ready to go on stage and that we kept on track with the schedule. I think this was probably the best job to have as all the running around to check on everyone kept me warm in the chilly breeze! The poor performers threw on all their warm clothes and coats the second they got off the stage. The Phoenix dancers in particular, with their bare feet, looked very cold.
The audience however, seemed oblivious to the cold as some of them stood for the whole two hours watching the performances, eating cake and having a go at some moves on our ballet barre. I think some people were surprised to happen upon a ballet performance in the middle of Briggate while they were doing their shopping, but they were soon moving closer to the stage to get a better view.
The whole event went very quickly and it was all too soon that we were packing up boxes of leaflets and taking down the banners. After all the fresh air and running around, I was exhausted but had really enjoyed meeting the public and talking to them about all the opportunities NBT could offer them.

Professional dancers and Academy students put on a great show for an enthralled crowd.
NBT Stuns Shoppers With Photo-shoot on Briggate
Shoppers in Leeds got more than they bargained for last week when dancers Anna Blackwell and Guiliano Contadini joined fellow participants and supporters to launch NBT’s 40th Anniversary street party Ballet on Briggate.

Ballet on Briggate takes place this Saturday 5 September from 12noon – 2pm in central Leeds. Dancers from NBT will perform alongside students from the NBT Academy, as well as a group of young people and adults who have come together to create a special performance piece for the event. NBT will be joined by Phoenix Dance Theatre who are partners in our new building – and it will be the first public opportunity to see the new Phoenix dancers under the new Artistic Direction of Sharon Watson.
This is a rare opportunity to watch NBT for free and in the open air. Dancers Martha Leebolt and Christopher Hinton-Lewis will perform an excerpt from Dracula, Sebastian Loe and Ashley Dixon will perform the Chinese Dance from The Nutcracker and Michela Paolacci and Hironao Takahashi will perform an excerpt of A Christmas Carol.
Briggate is the main shopping centre in Leeds and the event will attract people from across the region and further afield. There will be prize giveaways and a special rendition of “Happy Birthday”.
Don’t miss out on this free event. Come down and bring all your friends and family – we’ll see you there.

Dracula Visits Leeds Blood Donor Centre
Visitors to the Blood Donor Centre in Leeds on Friday got more than they bargained for when the world’s most famous blood sucker turned up for a bite to eat.

Dracula Arrives at the Blood Donor Centre, Leeds
Dracula swooped into the centre on the Headrow in Leeds where three brave members of the NBT Communications team volunteered to give blood despite the presence of the infernal fiend.
