Nottingham’s Favourite Ballet Company Delighted With Donations

November 25, 2009 at 11:21 am (Fundraising, General Information) (, , , , , , , )

Nottingham audiences at performances of Northern Ballet Theatre’s (NBT) A Christmas Carol proved that there were no Scrooges among them with their generous donations to momentum, NBT’s fundraising campaign for a purpose built home on Quarry Hill in central Leeds.

Dancers in costume held collection buckets at the exit doors after performances throughout the week and a staggering £3,936.00 was donated. NBT is truly grateful for this support from its Nottingham audiences. The Company has been touring to Nottingham for the past 20 years and always receives a warm welcome at the Theatre Royal.

The Company’s new building in Leeds will be a powerhouse for dance – the largest space for dance outside of London. Bringing together two of the UK’s leading dance companies, NBT and Phoenix Dance Theatre, it will be the only dance centre to house a national classical and a national contemporary dance company alongside each another. It will also be home to the NBT Academy and to Leeds Metropolitan’s new Dance Degree classes.

Everyone at NBT would like to say thank you to everyone who gave so generously. The total amount received or pledged towards momentum now stands at £1,462,441.72 of our £1.5million target.

NBT returns to the Theatre Royal in Nottingham from 13 to 17 May with its stunning production of Peter Pan a production that fascinates children and adults alike with its tale of Tinkerbell, the Lost Boys, pirates, fairy dust, crocodiles and of course Captain Hook.

We have just launched our second ebay auction. There are three very diverse lots, so hopefully something for everyone. You may find inspiration for that special Christmas present.

We have a signed limited edition print by renowned watercolour artist Ashley Jackson. With the current global markets investing in art is a hot trend and allows you to enjoy something tangible. The print is of The Cow and Calf Rocks on Ilkley Moor and is in perfect condition. This item has been very generously donated by the Yorkshire Society.

There is a family day to Harewood House for the 2010 season. This is one of the treasure houses of England. In addition to the fine art and beautiful landscapes it has a large children’s Adventure Playground and a famous Bird Garden.

Our final lot is for a VIP ballet afternoon. This includes lunch for two at the stylish Brasserie Blanc in Leeds, followed by a matinee performance by Northern Ballet Theatre, accompanied by Artistic Director David Nixon. David is an internationally recognized and award winning dance choreographer; this is a unique opportunity to hear first hand some fascinating insights into the performance.

School Roadshow Feedback

November 9, 2009 at 3:20 pm (General Information) ()

Since September Catherine Mullaney and Stephanie Bell from Northern Ballet Theatre’s (NBT) Communications Department have been visiting primary schools across Leeds with the Schools Roadshow. Using footage from NBT rehearsals and interviews with the dancers this free assembly aims to give pupils an introduction to the world of dance and ballet.

So far this year the Roadshow team have visited 14 schools speaking to a total of 3300 children. But the biggest audience so far was at Headfields Junior School who have 600 pupils! Having already visited the NBT studios and watched rehearsals, Headfields School were big NBT fans but this was the first time all the pupils got to see and hear more about the Company. Following the visit they decided to say thank you by sending some beautiful drawings and letters to the Roadshow team.

Northern Ballet Theatre (NBT) First Soloist Tobias Batley has been nominated for a Critics’ Circle National Dance Award in the category of Outstanding Male Performance (Classical).

Described by the Critics’ Circle as a “versatile dance-actor” and “an able comedian”, Tobias is nominated for his portrayal of Anthony, the leading male role in David Nixon’s Swan Lake, in which “he gave a performance of remarkable and poignant intensity”. He is nominated alongside Sergei Polunin from the Royal Ballet and Esteban Berlanga of English National Ballet.

Tobias joined NBT in 2004 and since then has risen rapidly through the ranks, distinguishing himself in many soloist roles for the Company. His favourite of these include the title role in Dracula, Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights and Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

“It’s very exciting to be nominated for such a prestigious award,” he says. “I’m flattered to be considered alongside dancers of such a high calibre. I’m particularly pleased to be nominated for this role as it is one I have really enjoyed performing.”

Ex-NBT dancer Sarah Kundi has also been nominated for an award in the Outstanding Female Performance (Classical) category. Sarah performed with NBT for four years and left to become a member of Ballet Black in November 2008. She has been noted by the Critics’ Circle for her “polished and confident” performances in Will Tuckett’s Depouillement and in Martin Lawrance’s duet Pendulum.

No strangers to the National Dance Awards, NBT received the Audience Award in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Last year the Company was awarded the coveted Patron’s Award which is given to an individual or organisation that has significantly furthered the cause of dance in the UK.

This year’s winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on 21 January 2010.
