Veronica Wadley appointed next London Chair of Arts Council England

We’re delighted that Veronica Wadley a member of Northern Ballet Theatre’s Board of Directors has been appointed as the next London Chair of Arts Council England. The appointment has been approved by Jeremy Hunt the new Secretary of State for culture, Olympics, media and sport and has been endorsed by leading figures such as Nick Hytner, Director of the National Theatre, Nick Kent, Director of the Tricycle Theatre and Julia Peyton-Jones, Director of the Serpentine Gallery.

NBT’s Chief Executive Mark Skipper said:

“Veronica joined NBT’s Board in the autumn of 2009 and has already made a huge contribution through her enthusiasm and passion for the arts and for Northern Ballet Theatre. We would like to offer her our congratulations on her new position.”

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said:

“Veronica Wadley is a hugely accomplished woman who has a proven passion for London and its unrivalled arts and culture. She will bring energy, drive and ambition to this vital sector that does so much for our quality of life in London and the capital’s reputation around the world. I am delighted that she has agreed to accept the challenge.”

Male & Female Dancer Auditions

Northern Ballet Theatre is the UK’s leading touring company giving over 160 performances each year in the UK and abroad. Our repertoire is a varied and imaginative mix of classic ballets and newly commissioned works.

We are holding an audition in London on Sunday 24 January 2010 and are looking for the following dancers for our 2010/11 seasons:

Male & Female Dancers

You will need to be technically and physically strong,creative dancers.

NBT students are excellent!

Seven of NBT’s students performed at excellent! at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London on Tuesday 15 July. excellent! was a celebration of the achievements of this country’s most talented young dancers and musicians. NBT’s students performed a piece by choreographer Sharon Watson, alongside seven students from the Northern School for Contemporary Dance (NSCD), to music composed by the Yorkshire Young Musicians (YYM).

The students spent three days in London and stayed at The Tring Arts Educational School. On the day before the performance the students rehearsed with the NSCD students and YYM at Sadler’s Wells to make sure they were ready for their big performance the following day. The excellent! performance was a fantastic success and the students met other young and talented dancers and musicians from across the country. All the students did the Company proud, well done everyone!

Joshua Ockerby who is in the third year of NBT’s Professional Training Division said, “It was amazing to perform on stage at one of the most famous dance venues in the world, I enjoyed every minute of it and hope I get to do it again soon! “

Hamlet takes to the stage at Sadler’s Wells

Belinda LawleyOur annual London season at Sadler’s Wells, sponsored by Manchester Airports Group, kicked off with a high profile opening night event. Guests from the worlds of art, business and media were all in attendance (photographs by Belinda Lawley). As ever the Company’s dancers and orchestra gave their all, delighting audiences throughout the week.

Yorkshire Young Dancers and Musicians are excellent!

Seven students from NBT’s pre-vocational training programme are taking part in a special performance at Sadler’s Wells in London on 15 July. Top choreographer Sharon Watson is creating a new dance piece for the group and fellow Yorkshire Young Dancers from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. The group will also collaborate with eight students from Yorkshire Young Musicians who are creating a new composition for the performance with Andrew Stamatakis-Brown.

YYD Students

The performance is a celebration of the achievements of this country’s most talented young dancers and musicians supported by the Department for Children, Schools and Families’ Music and Dance Scheme.

Rehearsals are well underway and the group will give a special preview performance at the Riley Theatre in Leeds on 27 June. Read the full media release here.
